David Mathews Center Project

The David Mathews Center for Civic Life is a non-profit, non-partisan, tax-exempt corporation.  Its purpose is to foster infrastructure, habits, and capacities for more effective civic engagement and innovative decision making.  For the past several years, the Mathews Center and the Community and Civic Engagement Initiative have collaborated through the Jean O'Connor-Snyder Internship program to develop civic skills in undergraduate students.

Each September, the Mathews Center and CCE participants moderate classroom forums on bullying, the topic of a previous Alabama Issues Forums series.  Through these classroom visits, students learn acts of citizenship through deliberation on a tough topic.

The Mathews Center also collaborates with CCE on Living Democracy, which provides summer living-learning experiences in Alabama communities.  For more information on Living Democracy, visit www.auburn.edu/livingdemocracy.
