Call for Applications: Samia I. Spencer 2020 Creative Mentorship Award
The Samia I. Spencer Creative Mentorship Award of the Women’s Studies Program in the College of Liberal Arts encourages and recognizes the special efforts of Women's Studies affiliate faculty who take an interest in the life and development of Women's Studies students through mentoring that extends beyond the classroom and degree curricula. It jointly rewards a faculty member and a student for their creative collaboration.
To be eligible for this award, the faculty member must be an affiliate of the Women's Studies Program and the student must have declared the Women's Studies undergraduate or graduate minor. The faculty candidate must have a tangible mentoring relationship with the student, and the focus of their work together needs to be the student’s extracurricular development of intellectual curiosity and research on issues related to women and gender. The research can stem from coursework or curricula, but the mentoring relationship needs to move beyond the classroom instructor-student relationship and/or the degree program advisor-student relationship. For instance, a student writes an excellent paper in a course, and would like to develop it further for a conference presentation or publication the following year. The faculty member agrees to mentor the student as s/he develops the project further, separate from coursework or degree requirements.
The student and the faculty member should prepare an application packet consisting of (1) a letter from the student describing the project and the mentoring relationship, (2) a letter from the faculty member describing the project and the mentoring relationship, and (3) materials that corroborate the project and relationship, such as the student’s vita/resume indicating any relevant academic activities, including conference presentations and publications.
The packet must be submitted by February 20, 2020 to the Director of Women's Studies, Dr. Arianne Gaetano (email@example.com). The Selection Committee, which will be organized by the Women's Studies Director, will meet to choose the award recipients. Awardees will be recognized at the Women’s Studies Program Award Ceremony on April 14, 2020, 4:00-5:30pm, at Pebble Hill.
The annual award totals $5,000, with $2,500 being awarded to the selected faculty member and $2,500 to the chosen student. If the selected application includes multiple faculty members or students, $2,500 will be split evenly among eligible faculty members and $2,500 among the eligible students.
