Dobrinka Georgieva

Dobrinka Georgieva, Ph.D.

Professor, Medical University-Plovdiv

Dr. Dobrinka Georgieva is a Full Professor in Social Medicine and part of the Research Institute at Medical University of Plovdiv, Bulgaria. She is the Founder and Program Director of the first master-level degree program in Medical Speech-Language Pathology (link). Her teaching, research, and clinical interests are in the area of stuttering and voice disorders, as well as history of speech-language pathology and evidence-based practice in SLP. Georgieva established the University Stuttering Research Center at South West University (Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria) in 2000, and was the Director until 2021.

Dr. Georgieva has authored numerous research and clinical articles, book chapters, and books in the areas of stuttering, cluttering, and voice disorders, and has presented at national and international conferences and congresses. In addition, she has coordinated many international and national projects and initiatives, including: World Bank project, Erasmus+, and Fulbright. Importantly, Dr. Georgieva was the leading person developing the Bulgarian Speech-Language Pathology (Logopedics) specialty recognition and evaluation in the field of Public Health.

She previously served as the Chief Editor of the Bulgarian Journal of Communication Disorders (2008-2014), and is currently a member of the International Association of Logopedics and Phoniatrics, International Fluency Association, and many other professional organizations. Dr. Georgieva holds specializations in the Netherlands, France, England, Russia, and United States of America. She is also a member of the US Department of State’s Global Fulbright alumna.

Derek E. Daniels

Derek E. Daniels, Ph.D., CCC-SLP

Dr. Derek E. Daniels is a licensed and certified speech-language pathologist who specializes in stuttering therapy. He has presented locally, nationally, and internationally on stuttering. He also serves as an associate editor for the Journal of Fluency Disorders, and an assistant editor for the Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences and Disorders journal.

 

Dr. Daniels’ research focuses on public perceptions of stuttering, and factors that influence the psychosocial experiences of people who stutter. He is particularly interested in identity, stigma, intersectionality, self-help groups, qualitative research methods, sociocultural (Vygotskian) theory, narrative therapy, and social constructionism, as they pertain to people who stutter, people with communication disorders, people with disabilities, and therapeutic practices.
