The last AUPS talk of the semester will be by David deBruijn (Auburn) on April 26th at 3pm in Ross 136. The title is "Perceptual Content and the Unity of Experience". Abstract below.

Abstract: For representationalists, perceptual experiences bear representational content. In this paper I provide an unusual avenue to this conclusion: representation content is associated with a type of unity in experience. Starting from recent work on propositional structure by Peter Hanks and Scott Soames, I develop a notion of “concept” on which it signifies not a predicative element, but rather a subject’s unified self-awareness of a type of conscious state. I argue that imbuing experience with conceptual content in this sense explains the structure of perception as a single, unified conscious experiential state. Further, I argue my view also provides a novel understanding of the epistemic role of perceptual representation.
