Senior in communication lands internship with Smithsonian

Allison Killingsworth landed an amazing internship with the help of CLA Career Services. Here is her story.

Tell us a little about yourself.

I'm a senior majoring in communication and minoring in history. I'm from Auburn and so proud to call this town and university my home. I am currently interning with the Smithsonian National Museum of American History in the Office of Special Events. I was chosen out of over 100 applicants and interviewees.

How did you find out about your new internship?

I found this amazing internship by reaching out to the Smithsonian directly. It has always been my dream to work at the Smithsonian. I am passionate about history, and I would love to work in a museum surrounded by history or art in the future.

How did CLA Career Services help you prepare for your internship?

CLA Career Services has been absolutely vital in achieving my internship goals. I have learned how to have an efficient resume and cover letter, how to professionally interview with companies, and how to reach out to potential employers. The courses LBAR 2010 and LBAR 4013 have been beyond helpful to me and many other students, and I am thankful that CLA Career Services cares so much for every individual student and their success.

How has your experience been?

My interning experience with the Smithsonian has been amazing! The interview progress was rigorous, but I felt prepared thanks to CLA Career Services. I have great mentors that really work their hardest to make this experience meaningful for me. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I'm completing this internship virtually from Auburn, but they still treat me as if I were right there in the museum with them. I'm getting the chance to receive hands-on experience with event planning by creating budgets, invitations, RSVP's, and decor. My big project this semester is switching over to a new calendar system for the whole museum. My mentors value networking, so every week I attend seminars with different leaders throughout the museum, teaching me about different aspects that go into running the largest museum in the world.

What advice would you give other students who are looking for internships and careers?

The best advice I can give to students searching for their dream internship is to not be afraid to reach out. People almost always want to help you and push you in the right direction. I had great professors that gave me recommendations for my internship, and I also reached out to students on Handshake who had completed internships with the Smithsonian in the past and asked about their experiences. The career center is an great tool to utilize also, so definitely get the most out of it. They offer resume reviews, interview practice, and even a career closet. CLA Career Services has been essential in helping me prepare for my internship, and I know they will be there for me as I search for full-time jobs soon. Special thanks to Mrs. McCarley, Dr. Larson, and Dr. Carter!
