Woodwind Audition Requirements

All woodwind auditions will consist of a chromatic scale, 12 major scales, 2 prepared pieces of contrasting style, and sight-reading. Accompaniment is not required for prepared pieces.

Flute

  • Chromatic scale – Three octaves
  • 12 major scales – Two octaves (three octaves if possible)
  • Two contrasting pieces demonstrating both technical facility and musicianship
    • One etude or solo piece of contrasting style
    • One solo piece or movement from a multi-movement work
  • Sight-reading

Recommended Flute Solos

  • Mozart – Concerto in G major or D major
  • Faure – Fantasie
  • Taktakishvili – Sonata

Recommended Flute Etude Books

  • Clardy – Flute Etudes Book
  • Berbiguier – 18 Studies
  • Andersen – Op. 41, 15, 33, or 3

Oboe

  • Chromatic scale – Low C to High C
  • 12 major scales – Two octaves (when possible)
  • Two contrasting pieces demonstrating both technical facility and musicianship
    • One solo piece or movement from a multi-movement work
    • One etude or solo piece of contrasting style
  • Sight-reading

Clarinet

    • One etude or solo piece of contrasting style

  • 12 major scales – Two octaves if possible (articulated ascending, slurred descending)
  • Two contrasting pieces demonstrating both technical facility and musicianship
    • One solo piece or movement from a multi-movement work
    • One etude or solo piece of contrasting style
