Iglesia De Cristo Church provides warm welcome

On a recent Sunday, I decided to visit the Iglesia De Cristo, or Hispanic Church of Christ, on Highway 68 close to Collinsville. Iglesia De Cristo is housed in a small brick building supported with four white columns. The white double doors and windows make a newcomer feel right at home.

Some youngsters have the tendency to become lazy in the summer, but some have the opportunity to participate in programs that promote cognitive growth and physical fitness. That opportunity is what the Elba Parks and Recreation Department hopes to provide with Camp E.X.C.E.L.

One of the biggest surprises for me here in Roanoke was discovering the vegetarian restaurant Gerson’s Garden. Nearing its four-year anniversary, Gerson’s Garden provides the citizens of Roanoke with great fresh food. Just four years ago Gerson’s Garden was just a produce market.

The Randolph County Youth Development Initiative (RCYDI) began when Marian Royston, an Auburn University and Living Democracy alumna and Roanoke native, decided to help her hometown combat an issue known as the rural “brain drain” -- the outmigration of talented, young people from rural communities.
