When I began my summer in Roanoke, I never imagined that my Living Democracy experience would involve a stint in court. Thankfully, my vantage point was from the attorney’s table rather than the defendant’s seat. I’ve met so many interesting, kind, and generous people during my summer in Roanoke, and local attorney Kesa Johnston Dunn has been one of my favorites.

Selma is in a process of redefining who she was meant to be. Unity is a universal desire amongst citizen leaders and agencies in the community. But what will it take to get the people on one accord? Racial tensions have openly plagued the city’s past from the Civil War through the Civil Rights battles later.

- Marengo County Commission Listens to Their Community

As the country seems to distrust national political figures, it is easy to assume the stance that “politicians are in it for themselves.” Listening and observing this week’s Marengo County Commission meeting, I learned that local politics is the purest example of American democracy. Chairman Fred Armstead called the meeting to order Tuesday morning.

- Council Meeting Provides Stage for Good Citizenship

I attended my first city council meeting in Roanoke on July 13. With its meeting time at 6 p.m. right after the end of many people’s working days, I imagined it would be a pretty small crowd. Much to my surprise, as we walked into City Hall ten minutes before the meeting was to start, the council room was almost completely full.

- Flying Adventure Takes Summer to New Heights

Jackie Windham is known by almost everyone in Elba. His namesake hardware store is a regular hangout spot that also provides supplies for Elba’s handy folks. He is also known for his planes, which can be seen circling over Elba a few times a week.
