Auburn University Student Begins Living Democracy in Collinsville

Auburn University Living Democracy Fellow Crystal Rawls began a ten-week living and learning experience in Collinsville, Alabama, May 13.  The media studies and creative writing major will be working with community partner Jennifer Wilkins, director of the Collinsville Public Library, as well as other local organizations.

Mark Wilson and Blake Evans of Auburn University moderated a forum titled “Strengthening Collinsville’s Future” on May 15 in Donna Jones’ classroom at Collinsville High School. Using an issue guide developed by the David Mathews Center for Civic Life, the forum allowed students to weigh the pros and cons of different approaches communities might take related to the issue.

Youth Come Together to Discuss Selma’s Future

Student representatives from high schools in Selma and Dallas County concluded that more opportunities to do things together would be a step in the right direction for their community. A group of 24 students from area high schools participated in the “Strengthening Selma’s Future” forum on Friday, April 17.
