European History
At Auburn University, European historians’ interests span the continent, including England and the British Isles, France, Italy, and Central Europe. We have particular strength in the history of political culture, the state and state formation, material cultures, cities and spaces, ideologies of race and racism, and European encounters and engagements with the rest of the world. Recognizing the transnational nature of these issues and themes, we meet regularly for a European Studies seminar, in which both faculty and graduate students present their research. Our commitment to active interdisciplinary research is also evident in the central involvement of faculty in the CLA’s Nineteenth-Century Studies Group. Europeanists also share interests with colleagues in other clusters at Auburn, particularly in the study of the Cold War era, urban planning and historic preservation, the politics of racism, and the history of science and technology.
Europeanists at Auburn are also active writers, with a number of recent monographs and articles in leading scholarly journals. We are active in regional and national associations, and present our research at a range of regional, national, and international venues. We have also been particularly successful in securing prestigious grants and fellowships, including from the American Philosophical Society, the British Academy, the Council for the International Exchange of Scholars (through its Fulbright Scholar Program), and the Folger Library.
