The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures recently hosted the 2019 Breeden Scholar, Dr. David Marlow, Professor of Linguistics and ESOL at the University of South Carolina Upstate (Spartanburg, SC). The Breeden Scholar’s visit was generously funded by the Caroline Marshall Draughon Center for the Arts and Humanities.
Dr. Marlow visited our campus on November 8 and 9, 2018, and met with Dr. Mark Wilson, Director of the Caroline Marshall Draughon Center for the Arts and Humanities; Dr. Giovanna Summerfield, Associate Dean for Education in the College of Liberal Arts; several administrators; faculty; and students. On Thursday afternoon, Dr. Marlow gave a talk on “What it means to be human…through the lens of linguistics” to a group of over 50 people. On Friday morning, Dr. Marlow gave a presentation on language variation to a large number of students and invited faculty. Auburn University is looking forward to having Dr. Marlow on campus during the spring semester of 2019.
