The humanistic and scientific exploration of environmental values is an important area of inquiry for scholars and policy makers across disciplines and professions. Environmental values are generally woven together with moral values and guide decisions about resource use and nation building. Many of these values come together in legal arguments, especially in public interest environmental cases in which citizens argue for the preservation of their natural resources. In India, citizens use legal avenues to argue for the maintenance of religious values and the preservation of natural resources, and draw upon a range of knowledge sources that includes but is not limited to scientific theories, official policies, legal frameworks, religious discourses and activist philosophies.
