Course Description

This course will help you develop skills in the three main areas of creative writing: fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. The class will read and discuss professionally published work in order to examine structure and elements of craft, such as character, point-of-view, setting, imagery, and theme. Class activities include a workshop format where you will be expected to present your writing to the class for critique. You will read, critique, and discuss each other’s work. Major projects include rough drafts and revised drafts of one short story, one work of nonfiction, and a collection of poetry. Additional requirements include class and workshop participation, writing exercises, online discussion posts, responses to assigned readings, author’s notes, and workshop critiques. Please note that this is not a study in genre fiction.
