Opelika Observer

The Opelika Observer and LIVE Lee Magazine is seeking interns for the fall semester with opportunities available in news writing, feature writing, sports reporting and photography.

These are all unpaid internships, though you do get paid a freelance fee for every piece you write or event you photograph.

NEWS AND FEATURE INTERN:

The Opelika Observer is a weekly paper that comes out each Thursday, with subscribers receiving copy on Fridays. Our focus is local news, community events, feature stories and local politics.

We cover council meetings, commission meetings, school boards, both Auburn and Opelika events and more.

Additionally, the LIVE Lee Magazine is a product of the Opelika Observer that is released bimonthly. As an intern with the Observer, you would be offered the opportunity to help with the magazine by writing feature stories.

SPORTS INTERN:

The Opelika Observer is looking for a fall intern interested in sports journalism. With a strong emphasis on print writing, duties of the intern will include but not be limited to:

  • Traveling to cover high school football games in Lee County on Friday nights
  • Developing relationships with local schools and coaching staffs
  • Writing/editing sports and school-related stories.
  • Assist in discussing/researching/planning stories and story angles
  • Taking photographs at the games(not required).

Other opportunities include:

  • Auburn University fall sport coverage

PHOTOGRAPHY INTERN:

We love photography over here! Our weekly pages, and magazine spreads, are photo-heavy. We send photographers to local events, businesses, council meetings, sports games and more. We try to keep it at two events a week, but the more you take,  the more you get paid.

These are all unpaid internships, though you do get paid a freelance fee for every piece you write or event you photograph.

If you are interested, reach out to LIVE Lee Editor Hannah Lester (hlester@opelikaobserver.com) or Sports Editor Wil Crews (sportscrews@opelikaobserver.com).
