About Me

Preston Sparks is the director of university communications services for Auburn University and an adjunct instructor teaching Multimedia Writing for Public Relations. He came to Auburn in 2018 and is responsible for directing the university’s news, web and social media team in the Office of Communications and Marketing, working with the university’s colleges and units to promote the stories that align with Auburn’s strategic plan and brand positioning.

Sparks has 25 years of experience in communications and marketing. Before coming to Auburn, Sparks served in various marketing roles in the education sector as Director of Marketing at the University of South Carolina Aiken and as Communications Director for a private school in Augusta, Ga. Prior to that, Sparks worked for 13 years in the field of journalism as a reporter, bureau chief and editor for the second largest newspaper in Georgia—The Augusta Chronicle. As a journalist, Sparks has earned multiple Georgia Press Association writing and photography awards and has written thousands of news articles on multiple beats, including government, crime, features, education, transportation and sports—most notably involving his coverage of the famed Masters golf tournament.
