New Features in Canvas 10/13/2012
Profile Page Title and URL Links
Canvas would produce errors when the position title and URL were longer than 255 characters. Titles can now not exceed 255 characters. Any URL will work that is longer than 255 characters.
Assignment Page Assignment Name
When users created a new assignment on the Assignment page, if the assignment name title is longer than 255 character it would time out. Now the field will not allow a user to exceed 255 characters.
Assignment Page Assignment Group Name
When users created a new assignment group on the Assignment page if the assignment name title is longer than 255 character it would time out Now the assignment group field will not allow you to exceed 255 characters.
Section Limited TAs Viewing All Student Quiz Submissions
When a TA had access to view a limited number of sections, and they clicked on the "Show Student Quiz Results" button they were able to see quiz results for students in all sections. Also the submissions listed on the TA's To-Do List to grade included sections in a course they didn't have access to. Both of these bugs have been fixed so the TAs only see the sections they have permission to see.
When copying a course, the links in Pages to other Pages in the course were broken. This links now work.
Sort Files Alphabetically
Files in the Files Repository were sorted based on the chronological order in which the file and folders were added. You could manually sort the files and folders with drag and drop. Now all files and folders are sorted alphabetically when they are added in both the Course File Repository and the User File Repository. These files and folders will not have the ability to be dragged and dropped. This is based off of research and user feedback. Very few users were using the drag and drop and majority those that were used the feature to sort alphabetically.
Logging into Canvas on IE8 and IE9
When users logged into Canvas on Internet Explorer 8 or 9, while the cursor was on the password text field the user would attempt to press the enter key, but it would not log the user in. Now by hitting the enter key while the cursor is in the password text field it will submit user login information.
Discussion Topic Search
When a user searched for a discussion on the Discussion Index page in Internet Explorer, then deleted that entry, and hit search it would pull up discussions associated with the deleted entry. The user would have to refresh the page to get a new search. Now a user can clear the search entry, and get the appropriate filter results.
Profile Picture Link
When a user would click on the image of another user on the People page there would be a page error. Now a user can view user details when they click on the profile picture without a page error.
Assignments in Course Migration
When a course was exported and then imported into a new course the assignments were not always segregated in the correct assignment groups like they were initially placed in the original course. They are now bucketed into the right assignment groups when imported into a new course.
Assignment Files Links
When a user would copy courses or export and import a course, the links in an Assignment page to Pages in the File Repository would be removed. Now those links will be maintain when courses are migrated.
Alt Text in Profile Pictures
There was no alt text in profile pictures, which should be there for screen readers to interpret the profile pictures. Alt text now will be a part of profile pictures.
When a teacher created a quiz and allowed multiple attempts they could create a large number of additional attempts with dozens of digits. Now there is a limit to attempts. The number can be no more than 3 digits (999).
Conversation Messages Without Text
When sending or forwarding a message in Conversations without text it wouldn't send, but there wasn't any warning that encouraged you to put in text or a recipient's name. Now there is a red error message that will tell the user that they should write text in the body and make sure there is a recipient's name.
Modules and Locked External URLs
When a user locked a module after a certain date, if there was an external URL in the module the students could still access that external URL. Students will now get a message that this external URL is locked when appropriate.
Bulk Private Messages
Group messages took a while to send messages and often would send an error about invalid recipients even though the recipients were valid. We also did several backend tweaks to help speed up this process. Now bulk messages should send faster and not send an error of invalid recipients.
Muting Uploaded Assignments
When an instructor muted an assignment (preventing students from receiving notifications on that assignment while a teacher is grading that specific assignment), downloaded the assignment, uploaded the assignment, and graded the assignment with comments then a student would still receive comment notifications even though the assignment was muted. This has been fixed so that muted assignments won't give comment notifications to students until the assignment is unmuted by the instructor.
There were certain images in quizzes that certain students could view while others couldn't. This has been fixed so all students will be able to see all quiz images.
