Degree Programs
The Department of History offers two graduate degree programs. These are:
Master of Arts. The M.A. program includes a minimum
of 27 hours of coursework and 4 hours of research and thesis. The department
does not offer a non-thesis M.A. No foreign language is required. At least
21 hours of course work must be taken in graduate seminars rather than lecture
courses.
Doctor of Philosophy. The doctoral program requires a minimum
of 55 hours of course work beyond the baccalaureate degree, reading proficiency
in at least one foreign language, and a minimum of 10 hours of research
and dissertation. At least 42 hours of coursework taken toward the degree
must be in graduate seminars rather than lecture courses. Applicants for
graduate study may be admitted to either a direct-track doctoral program
following completion of the baccalaureate or transfer to the doctoral program
after completion of the M.A. degree.
