Fields of Study

Doctoral students may specialize in one of the following major fields:

1. United States to 1865

2. United States since 1865

3. Europe 1500-1789

4. Europe since 1789

5. Technology

In addition to a major field, student will designate two minor fields of study. Options for minor fields include any of the fields listed above, plus Latin America, Archival Studies, and World History, and it is also possible to create a thematic minor field.

Students are also required to take one additional breadth field or a teaching field in World History. See the Graduate Student Handbook for more information.
