Costs and Financial Assistance

Information about tuition and general fees for full-time Liberal Arts graduate students is available through the Student Financial Services Business Office. A full-time load is nine semester hours of credit or more per semester.

Financial aid is available to both masters and doctoral students in the form of Graduate Teaching Assistantships. These are usually granted on a nine-months basis, beginning in August. Details of these awards are published annually, and applicants should address inquiries to the History Department.

Assistants are generally assigned to professors teaching undergraduate survey courses and senior doctoral students may be assigned independent teaching according to departmental needs. Awards are made annually on a competitive basis on the recommendation of the Graduate Committee. Primary consideration is given to grade point averages, Graduate Records Examinations scores, letters of recommendation, and performance as a GTA (in the case of current appointees). Assistantships require a commitment of approximately 13 hours a week. Masters students are eligible to hold assistantships for two academic years and doctoral students are eligible for four academic years. For students in the direct-track doctoral program, maximum eligibility is five academic years. A few assistantships are available for the summer terms. Eligibility is generally based on seniority, academic record and past performance as a GTA. Additional details relating to graduate assistantships can be found in the History Department Guidelines for Graduate Teaching Assistants. In addition to the stipend, Graduate Teaching Assistants receive a full tuition waiver.
