Dr. Swingen received her BA with honors from Swarthmore College and her MA and PhD from the University of Chicago. Her dissertation, “The Politics of Labor and the Origins of the British Empire,” explores how English politics and ideas of political economy influenced the development of African slavery in England’s West Indies colonies. Dr. Swingen teaches in the World History sequence and also teaches courses in early modern English, British, and European history. Her research interests include early modern British politics and the development of political culture, ideas of political economy, and the British transatlantic empire in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
