Guy V. Beckwith (associate professor) received his bachelor's degree at the University of California at Santa Cruz, and his M.A. and Ph.D. at U.C. Santa Barbara. He filled in for Professor W. David Lewis in 1978-79, and returned to Auburn on a tenure-track appointment in 1980.

Dr. Beckwith's many interests include the history of technology, ancient Greek technology in particular, European intellectual history, and the philosophy of history. He has published articles in a number of journals including The South Atlantic Quarterly, Science, Technology and Human Values, and Issues in Integrative Studies. The textbook he co-edits, Readings in Technology and Civilization I, is used in Auburn's Technology and Civilization series and in courses at a number of other colleges.

Dr. Beckwith was awarded an Alumni Teaching Excellence Award in 1996, and the coveted College of Liberal Arts Award for Teaching Excellence in the Humanities in 2003. He was also instrumental in establishing Auburn's Honors Program (now the AU Honors College) and in developing the curriculum for the innovative Human Odyssey series.
