Leah Rawls Atkins (Auburn History B.A. 1959, M.A. 1960, and Ph.D. 1974) was awarded the Auburn Alumni Association's 2004 Lifetime Achievement Award. Atkins, the department's first Ph.D. graduate, became the founding director of the Auburn University Center for Arts and Humanities at Pebble Hill in 1985. She retired from the position in 1995. Prior to that role Atkins taught history at Auburn, the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and Samford University. She lives in Birmingham.
