Mary Dixie Dysart (Auburn History Ph.D., 1999) wrote her dissertation, "'No Place for a Christian': Women Inmates in Alabama Prisons, 1901-1943," under the direction of Professor J. Wayne Flynt.

She defended her thesis, entitled "'Us Poor Country People Need Help': The Impact of Federal Maternity and Infancy Legislation in Alabama 1920-1935," in 1991.
