David C. Arnold (Auburn History Ph.D., 2002) wrote his dissertation, "Supporting New Horizons: the Evolution of the Military Satellite Command and Control System, 1944-1969," under the direction of Professor James Hansen. His book, Spying from Space: Constructing America's Satellite Command and Control Systems, was published in 2005 by Texas A&M University Press. In 2006, he received the Gill Robb Wilson Award from the United States Air Force for his writing on national defense. He now is the commander of the 22d Space Operations Squadron and is the editor of Quest: The History of Spaceflight Quarterly.
