The Graduate Certificate in Technical Communication consists of the most practical courses offered in our Master in Technical and Professional Communication (MTPC). For current employees in business or industry, the Graduate Certificate in Technical Communication may lead to an increase in job responsibilities and perhaps salary.

The Graduate Certificate in Technical Communication requires completion of 12 hours of courses as follows:

  • ENGL 7000: Technical and Professional Editing (3)
  • ENGL 7010: Technical and Professional Communication Issues and Approaches (3)
  • ENGL 7080: Document Design in Technical and Professional Communication (3)
  • One elective from the list below:
    • ENGL 7020: Pedagogy of Technical and Professional Communication (3)
    • ENGL 7030: Studies in Technical and Professional Communication (3)
    • ENGL 7060: Web Development (3)
    • ENGL 7070: Grant and Proposal Writing (3)
    • ENGL 7090: Topics in Technical and Professional Communication (3)
    • ENGL 7910: Practicum in Technical and Professional Communication (3)

Current graduate students at Auburn University may be able to pursue the Graduate Certificate in Technical Communication along with their other coursework. Students who find that they want to continue coursework in technical and professional communication after completing the certificate may transfer the 12 hours into the Master of Technical and Professional Communication program.

Admission to the MTPC program is not automatic upon completion of the Graduate Certificate in Technical Communication. To be admitted to the MTPC program, applicants will need to take the GRE and apply through the Graduate School. The application will be reviewed by the MTPC faculty. If an applicant is then admitted, the 12 hours from the Graduate Certificate will be transferred to the MTPC.

The application process for the graduate certificate is the same as that for the MTPC program. All application materials should be submitted through the Graduate School.

At the moment, the GRE is not required for admission to the Graduate Certificate, but applicants will need to send transcripts and pay an application fee.
