Jameson Smith: White Shark Diving

Jameson Smith (MDIV)

I was fortunate enough to be offered an internship with the company “White Shark Diving Company” in Gansbaai, South Africa. I handled all of the production and postproduction content to prepare for their social media platforms. I supervised volunteers as we did activities like shark cage diving, garden route tours, volunteer programs, and even safaris. It was a once in a lifetime experience that I will never forget and am eternally grateful for.

I gained this internship by reaching out to them via social media and asked if they had any openings for a media production job and they were very interested. My advice to interns would be DO NOT SETTLE. Do not pick an internship that you are not passionate about or because it’s easy or it is convenient with your class schedule. There are so many companies around the world that need support with media programs and are constantly looking for interns to help within their social media platforms. and advertisements, everything needs media in today's world. A lot of these internships provide living, stipends, and food.

I learned to be flexible. Things are going to happen that are out of your control and there is simply nothing you can do about it. Whether it is weather, a cable not working, a scratch on a lens, be prepared for the worst all the time and also don’t beat yourself up over when these things do happen.

Be the worker you would hire. Be dedicated with what you do and allow your passion to show through your work.
